An Intro of Sorts
I'm Malia, the moody reader behind Romance Schmomance.
Last week I chimed in about the somewhat end of my bookstagrm era and giving it a whirl over here on Substack. I still feel like I have no idea what I’m doing here, but it’s been pretty great to interact with the bookish community.
And I thought it would be a great time to do a little intro!
Aloha and welcome, I’m Malia, the romance book reader/review behind Romance Schmomance. It was 2011, just graduated college and moved across the country to be with my boyfriend (now husband). I was still in the process of looking for a job and suddenly with time on my hands. Went to the local library, got a card and started perusing the romance section. Nora Roberts was really the start for me, I just couldn’t stop reading. And that’s how Romance Schmomance started, I wanted to have a place where I could talk about all the romance books that I loved and find a community within this space.
At the beginning of the year, I had so many intentions when it came to my bookish space and for a couple of months, it was beginning to move in the direction that I wanted. Then life happened and was hit with some tough news with my family. It’s been a lot to work through and something that will continue to be a major presence for years to come. Due to my husband’s job, we move around every few years and let me just say, I am tired and so eager to set roots somewhere. In the next couple of years we might have a chance to, but it’s forever a sea of unknowns. We moved back to my home state for the next couple of years and while it has been amazing to be close to family again after 10 years. I have a front row seat to EVERYTHING.
So here we are, just taking everything one day at a time and figuring out what my bookish space will be like for the foreseeable future.
I’ll definitely be sharing my other hobbies that I’ve picked up on and hopefully reviving things with my digital journaling and blog. I’m not trying to put any pressure on anything. We’ll see how it goes.
If you’re here to stay, thank you. Not sure what this space will offer, but I’m pretty content for now ;-) I’ve already DNFed two books this week, so please drop some recs for romance, please!
